Cabo Freak Fest

Over two decades ago, I asked the creator of Cabo Freak Fest, Cameron Steele, if I could have his blessings to take the reigns of the iconic bodyboarding trip to Los Cabos. Lucky for me and many other bodyboarders from around the world, he said yes.

Just to be super clear... This is a bodyboarding trip. The Cabo Freak Fest of today is all about adventuring to find empty waves, getting pitted, and having a good times with our fellow spongers. Sorry, we won't be having drinking contests, taco-eating contests or any of the events of years past. If this is cool with you, keep on reading amigos.

As mentioned, Cabo Freak Fest of years past was very different from what we're offering this year. You're guaranteed to have an epic time. In 2023, we're holding off on the belly flop contest from a 12-foot ladder; we're going to hold off on the milk drinking contest; no more Century Club; and no more late nights at Squid Roe. That doesn't mean you can't go out and do all these things but now we're at the age where it'll take the entire week to recover from one night out on the town.

Now... we dawn patrol to score epic waves in and around the entire Land's End Baja peninsula; we eat delicious food and have amazing dinners; we watch videos and photos of our last session; we adventure to new locations in search of empty perfection; and we get to chill in our private hotel right in the middle of paradise. Keep reading to see what your week in Los Cabos will look like.

Sunday August 18
Travel Day. This is the day you show up and get picked up at the airport by Manny V or one of his drivers. You'll be whisked away to our hotel for the week. The hotel is a cool enclosed property right in the middle of downtown Cabo San Lucas. The tall walls around the perimeter keeps the noise out and is super safe.

This day, is all about settling in and getting you prepped for the action-filled week ahead. I'll go over the schedule for the week and fill you in on the do's and don'ts while in Los Cabos.

Monday August 19
We are up at the crack of dawn to search for the warm water barrels we've been talking about this whole time. We will have photographers in the water and on land to ensure we capture most of your waves. The chances are we'll end up at one of the most consistent beach breaks in the zone. It's a 35-minute drive to the beach. We'll stop at a smoothie spot on our way out. This is to ensure we have the power in our system to get the most out of session one.

Lunch will be shortly after our session. It's only minutes from where we just surfed. El Kiosko has never let us down. Fresh fruit juice and large portions of delicious Mexican food will top off your hunger and leave you ready for a nap.

We head back to the hotel and chill for a few hours. If the winds are down, then we make an effort to look for more waves. If not, then we become the tourists that we are and take a walk around Cabo San Lucas.

Dinner will be at one of the many restaurants around town or near the place where we bodyboard... if we have that afternoon session.

Tuesday August 20 - Saturday August 24
After checking the surf reports, we make our way to the best spot to get some empty perfection. This is a fluid schedule. If the surf reports point to good waves to the north, we head north. If the reports say repeat Monday, we head back to the spot we were yesterday. We have over 100 miles of coastline to choose from. The call will have been already made the night before. Breakfast burritos and smoothies will be our daily power breakfast. Lunch will be had near our surf spot. And dinner will be at one of the epic restaurants around town.

Sunday August 25
Travel Day. We head to one of my favorite breakfast places in all of Cabo. We head over to Mama Royale and feast before we all head home.

Another awesome thing about coming to Cabo Freak Fest is the community. The locals are beyond cool and we get to share their waves and good vibes. To me, that's the best part of it all. I've met so many great people along the way and you can too. As you know, our bodyboarding community is small and tight but extends to every part of the world. Come with friends or come solo... you'll leave with more friends and more smiles no matter what.

Please contact me if you need help with flights to Cabo (airport code: SJD). Ideally, you'll want to fly into SJD early on the 18th of August and to get an afternoon flight back home on the 25th. That'll allow for more time on both ends.
